How to Open PDFs with Helperbird in Google Drive, Classroom or Gmail,

The PDF you need to read is sitting in Google Drive.

Helperbird cannot open it from there.

Open the PDF From Your Computer

1. Download the PDF from Drive, Classroom or Gmail to your computer.
2. In the Helperbird popup, open All Features, find PDF Reader, then click the open icon at the end of its row. It is labelled Open PDF Reader for screen readers.
3. Select Open PDF and pick the file.

The file stays on your computer. Nothing is uploaded to open it.

The reader reads the current page aloud. Moving to another page stops it.

Neural voices need Helperbird Pro. They send the page text to Microsoft Azure to be spoken.

You can also annotate a PDF and download a copy.

Why Drive, Classroom and Gmail Are Different

Helperbird offers to open a PDF when the address of the page ends in .pdf. Drive, Classroom and Gmail addresses do not, so the offer never appears.

What This Does Not Do

• Helperbird is not one of the apps in Google’s Open with menu.
• The Google Docs, Slides and Sheets add-on does not open PDFs. It works inside those three editors only.
• The offer to open a PDF in Helperbird only appears when the page address ends in .pdf. A PDF you open from your computer in a browser tab does not show it.
• Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened. You get Couldn't open PDF.
