What You Need

  • An Android phone or tablet

  • Firefox for Android supports extensions, which is how Helperbird works on your phone

Step 1: Install Firefox

If you do not have Firefox installed, download it from the Google Play Store.

  1. Open Firefox on your Android device
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner
  3. Tap Add-ons
  4. Tap Find more add-ons
  5. Search for Helperbird
  6. Tap Add to Firefox and then tap Add to confirm

Helperbird is now installed.

Step 3: Open Helperbird on a Website

  1. Go to any website in Firefox
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner
  3. Tap Add-ons
  4. Tap Helperbird to open it

Helperbird will appear as a panel over the page.

Step 4: Use Helperbird Features

You can use the same features as on desktop, including:

  • Text to Speech — Have any text read aloud
  • Extract Text (OCR) — Pull text out of images, worksheets, or documents
  • Dyslexia Fonts — Switch to a more readable font
  • Color Overlays — Reduce eye strain with a tinted overlay
  • Reading Mode — Strip away clutter and focus on the content

Tap any feature to turn it on. Your settings are saved automatically.

Step 5: Sign In to Pro

To unlock all features, sign in with your email or subscription key:

  1. Open Helperbird from the Add-ons menu
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Settings
  3. Tap Subscription key

Tips

  • Quick access — After installing, Helperbird appears in your Add-ons menu every time you tap the three-dot menu
  • OCR on the go — The Extract Text feature is great for reading printed text like signs, worksheets, or textbook pages
  • Offline features — Font changes, overlays, and reading rulers work without an internet connection

Immersive Reader from Microsoft is amazing, but my friends in Google districts were missing out until I found Helperbird. Great for proofreading! Simply highlight the text and have it read back to you, change the spacing in your view, highlight parts of speech, even translate by word or by document to have it read to you and adjust the speed! So amazing that I posted a YouTube tutorial within days of installing it. Plus, unlike many extensions, it didn't ask for obnoxious permissions like asking to delete everything in my Google Drive. #Winner #a11y
