How to Use Helperbird at Home

Learn how students can use Helperbird on their home computer or personal device, even if their school provides Helperbird through a district account.

·

If a student uses Helperbird at school and wants to use it at home too, there are a few ways to make that happen. This guide covers the options for parents and students.

Overview

Helperbird works on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. It can be used on any personal computer, laptop, or tablet that supports one of these browsers. The student does not need a school-issued device to use Helperbird at home.

Option 1: Log in with a School Google Account

If the student's school provides Helperbird through a district Google account, the student may be able to use it at home by logging into Chrome with their school Google account on a personal computer.

Here is how:

  1. Open Google Chrome on the home computer.
  2. Click the profile icon in the top right corner of Chrome.
  3. Click Add to add a new profile.
  4. Sign in with the student's school Google account (for example, student@schooldistrict.org).
  5. Chrome will sync the student's extensions, including Helperbird.
  6. Helperbird should appear in the toolbar and be ready to use.

Note: This only works if the school's Google Admin allows Chrome sync and extension syncing for student accounts. If it does not work, check with the school's IT department or try Option 2.

Option 2: Use a Subscription Key

If the school or Helperbird support provides a subscription key, the student can install Helperbird on any browser and enter the key to activate Pro features.

Here is how:

  1. Install Helperbird from the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons, or Firefox Add-ons.
  2. Click the Helperbird icon in the browser toolbar.
  3. Go to Settings (gear icon).
  4. Find the Subscription Key section.
  5. Enter the subscription key provided by the school or Helperbird support.
  6. Click Save and Helperbird Pro features will activate.

For a full walkthrough, see our guide: How to Use Your Subscription Key

Tip: Ask the school's IT admin or Helperbird support for a subscription key that can be used on home devices. They can create one specifically for students using Helperbird outside of school.

Option 3: Get a Personal Subscription

If the student or parent wants their own Helperbird Pro subscription for use at home, they can purchase one directly.

  1. Visit helperbird.com/pricing to see the available plans.
  2. Individual Pro subscriptions start at $6.99 per month or $30 per year.
  3. After subscribing, follow the Login Guide to activate your account.

iPad and iPhone

Helperbird is also available on iPad and iPhone through the App Store. If the student wants to use Helperbird on an iPad at home:

  1. Download Helperbird from the App Store.
  2. Enable Helperbird in Safari by going to Settings > Safari > Extensions > Helperbird and turning it on.
  3. Enter a subscription key or log in to activate Pro features.

I purchased this for my daughter who has been having a lot of difficulty accessing the online work set remotely by her teachers during our National Lockdown because of Covid-19. Her dyslexia was really hindering her ability to complete tasks and keep up which in turn led to increased anxiety levels...a really horrid place to be in during a global pandemic! Helper bird has been a vast help and I fully recommend it and wish more schools knew about it. Thank You Helper Bird.

I really liked the ease of setting up and also accessing the tool while you are on chrome. I had no trouble, and within a week found myself using it without even noticing.

Immersive Reader from Microsoft is amazing, but my friends in Google districts were missing out until I found Helperbird. Great for proofreading! Simply highlight the text and have it read back to you, change the spacing in your view, highlight parts of speech, even translate by word or by document to have it read to you and adjust the speed! So amazing that I posted a YouTube tutorial within days of installing it. Plus, unlike many extensions, it didn't ask for obnoxious permissions like asking to delete everything in my Google Drive. #Winner #a11y
